Winterbourne Bassett Stone Circle

The stones themselves aren't dramatic - no towering monoliths or perfect geometric arrangements. Winterbourne Bassett Stone Circle, just outside Marlborough in Wiltshire, is more understated than its famous neighbours like Stonehenge or Avebury. It's a genuine Neolithic site though, which is rather the point.

You're looking at roughly twenty stones scattered across a field, weathered and modest. Some are barely knee-height. But there's something rather good about that - no crowds, no visitor centre, just the Bronze Age circle doing its thing without fuss. The walk to reach it takes you through proper countryside, which adds to the sense of actually discovering something rather than visiting a tourist tick-box.

History enthusiasts get the most from this one. Casual walkers might feel a bit underwhelmed unless you're genuinely keen on ancient Britain and its quieter monuments. The site costs nothing and you can visit whenever suits you - no opening hours, no gates. Allow thirty minutes to have a proper look around and take a few photos.

It works brilliantly alongside a stay at Ridgeway Campsite, just six miles away. You can combine it with walks across the Ridgeway itself and the broader stone circles scattered across the Marlborough Downs. Worth adding to an itinerary if you're already exploring the Wiltshire archaeological landscape, but don't drive out of your way specially unless ancient circles are genuinely your thing.
