Milk Hill

At 964 metres, Milk Hill is the highest point in Wiltshire, and frankly, it's a bit of an anticlimax when you get there. The summit is farmland - proper working fields - so don't expect a dramatic rocky peak or a viewing platform. What you do get is genuine Wiltshire downland rolling in all directions, with views across to the Marlborough Downs on a clear day.

The walk up takes about 45 minutes from the nearest car parking, and it's steady rather than steep. The real appeal here isn't the destination itself but the walk through chalk grassland that feels genuinely remote despite being just a few miles from Marlborough. On the way, you'll pass Bronze Age barrows and get a proper sense of why this landscape has been settled for millennia.

It's worth doing if you're already camping in the area - Ridgeway Campsite is barely a mile away, making it an obvious morning ramble before breakfast. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the featureless summit a letdown after the climb. Walkers who love the Downs will get more from it than Instagram-hunters chasing a dramatic photo.

Free to access, no facilities at the top. Go early or late in the day to avoid getting tangled up with other visitors on the narrow paths. The real bonus is the solitude - most people heading to Wiltshire never venture this far out.
