Winscales Hill

The walk up Winscales Hill from Maryport takes you through proper Cumbrian countryside, rising to just 160 metres but offering surprisingly decent views across the Solway Firth towards Scotland. It's not a mountain - don't expect Alpine drama - but it's a solid little walk, maybe 45 minutes to the top if you're not dawdling, and the paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost.

From the summit you get a good sweep of the coast. On a clear day you can pick out the Scottish hills across the water, and the industrial heritage of the area - old mines, the power station - sits quite honestly in the landscape rather than spoiling it. It's the sort of walk that appeals to families after a gentler morning outing, or to anyone wanting to stretch their legs without committing to a full Lake District expedition. Probably take just over an hour all told.

There's nothing formal about it - no visitor centre, no café at the top, no admission charge. You just turn up and walk. That's rather refreshing, honestly. The nearest proper base is Greysouthen Caravan Site, only 3.4 miles away, which is handy if you're doing a Cumbrian caravan holiday and want to break things up with some gentle hill time. Worth pairing it with coastal walks towards Maryport itself rather than treating it as a destination in isolation. Best visited when the weather's settled - these northern slopes can get properly wet and muddy when it rains.
