Winnall Down

The walk up Winnall Down from Winchester isn't long, but it packs proper views across the city and the rolling Hampshire countryside beyond. You're looking at chalk downland - that distinctive pale, open terrain that characterises this part of the South - with paths worn smooth by walkers who've been making this trek for years.

It takes about 20 minutes to reach the top from the edge of Winchester town centre, so this isn't a major expedition. The real appeal is how quickly you escape the bustle of the city and find yourself on open ground with decent visibility. On a clear day you can see right across the valley. History types might enjoy knowing Winchester's significance - Roman settlement, Saxon capital, medieval powerhouse - all visible from up here in miniature.

Families will manage the ascent without drama, though younger legs will notice the climb. You won't need to allow more than an hour and a half total. It's the sort of walk that rewards you with a proper sense of achievement without demanding serious fitness.

If you're staying at Winchester Morn Hill or one of the other caravan sites within a few miles, Winnall Down makes an excellent morning or late afternoon outing. Pair it with a walk through Winchester's centre - the cathedral, the High Street - and you've got a solid day. The downside: it can feel a bit exposed in wind or rain, and there's no shelter or facilities at the top. But on decent weather it's well worth the short detour.
