Park Copse

Just outside Winchester, Park Copse is a proper woodland walk through mixed forest - nothing fancy, but solid. The trees are decent-sized and the canopy does what it's supposed to do on a bright day, which is to say it cools things down and makes everything feel a bit removed from the world.

It's the sort of place walkers actually use rather than just photograph. You'll find yourself on well-trodden paths threading between oak and beech, nothing dramatic in terms of elevation or panoramic views, but that's rather the point. The forest floor is soft underfoot and the whole thing feels genuinely quiet - unusual for somewhere within easy reach of Winchester town centre.

This works best as a break from a caravan stay rather than a day out on its own. The nearby sites like Holden Farm and Hampshire Hills are both close enough that you could pop over for a 45-minute walk without it eating your whole morning. Families with children who'll actually walk without complaining (older kids, not toddlers) will get something out of it. Serious hikers might find it a bit tame.

You won't find facilities or signage befitting a visitor attraction, which is either refreshing or slightly off-putting depending on your mood. No admission charge likely applies, but don't expect anything beyond the woodland itself. Go midweek if you value peace and quiet. Early morning is your best bet for catching it properly empty.
