Winkie the Pigeon

There's a small memorial in Tayport that marks one of the most unlikely wartime tales you'll come across - the story of Winkie the pigeon. During the Second World War, this single bird became a lifeline for a crashed RAF crew, flying 120 miles through fog and enemy fire to deliver their only distress message. She arrived exhausted at the loft in Dundee, and because of that message, the men were rescued.

The memorial itself is modest and easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but that's rather fitting. This isn't about grand statements - it's about the small, stubborn acts that made the difference when it mattered. Winkie was awarded the Dickin Medal, an honour rarely given outside of dogs and horses, which tells you something about what she achieved.

It's a two-minute stop really, more of a pilgrimage than a destination. Best suited to history enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in the war years, though children often find the story compelling once you explain it. There's nothing to do here in the traditional sense - you walk, you read, you think a bit. The nearby caravan parks at Tayport Links and Larick make this easy to slot into a Fife holiday. You're close enough to Tayport's seafront for a proper walk afterwards, and the Tay estuary views are worth lingering for. Free to visit, naturally. Go when the weather's decent - standing about reading a plaque on a rainy day loses some of the moment.
