Wingate Welfare Park

The stretch of grassland and scrub at Wingate, just outside Hartlepool, doesn't announce itself loudly. There's no visitor centre, no café, no proper car park to speak of - just open ground where locals walk their dogs and the occasional keen birdwatcher sets up with binoculars. It's a working nature reserve, which means it exists to do a job rather than to entertain you, and frankly that's part of its appeal.

You get wildflowers in spring and summer - bird's-foot trefoil, cowslips, the usual suspects - and the scrubland attracts migrating warblers if you know what to listen for. Winter brings finches. It's the sort of place where families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes before someone asks if there's an ice cream van, but serious walkers and bird enthusiasts will find it quietly rewarding. The coastal location means you're often walking into decent light from the east, and on clear days you can see across the water toward Teesside.

Free to visit and no set hours that I can find - just turn up. Allow an hour if you're taking it seriously, half that if you're just stretching your legs between caravan sites. It pairs well with the surrounding parks: Castledene and Woodside Ridge are both within two miles, and if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Crimdon Dene down the coast, this makes a proper morning's work without the drive. Don't expect manicured paths or signage. Wear decent boots after rain.
