Wing Maze

The Iron Age settlement at Wing sits just outside Corby, a sprawling maze of ditches and earthworks that tell the story of people who lived here over two thousand years ago. There's not much to see at first glance - mostly crop marks and slight depressions in the ground - but that's rather the point. This is proper archaeology, the sort of place where you need to use your imagination and maybe a decent guidebook.

Walkers will get the most from Wing. The site itself demands nothing more than half an hour of wandering the fields, but the surrounding Northamptonshire countryside rewards a proper explore. It's the kind of spot that appeals to history enthusiasts who don't mind a bit of detective work, reading the landscape rather than standing in front of polished displays. Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already keen on Iron Age Britain.

Access appears to be free - it's largely an open-air archaeological site rather than a managed visitor attraction. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with OS map skills or a decent app if you want to make sense of the layout. Best visited in winter or early spring when crops are lower and earthworks more visible.

If you're staying at New Lodge Farm in nearby Bulwick, Wing makes for a gentle afternoon outing combined with country walks. Don't expect dramatic ruins or museum-quality interpretation. What you get instead is the real thing - a quiet field and the chance to stand where an Iron Age community once thrived.
