Hostage Wood

A walk through Hostage Wood near Corby takes you into proper woodland - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a small forest rather than a sprawling estate, which means you won't be trudging for hours, but there's enough path to make it feel like a proper escape from town.

The woodland itself is straightforward: mixed trees, some decent clearings, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the car behind. On a decent day the light filters through nicely. It's the sort of spot families with younger kids will manage without complaint - nothing taxing, no dramatic elevation changes. Dog walkers clearly know about it. You'll see evidence.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Go in the morning if you can, especially weekends, or you'll be sharing the paths with half of Corby. Spring and autumn beat summer hands down - fewer midges, better light.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - New Lodge Farm or Rockingham Forest Park down the road - this makes a solid morning activity to break up the camping routine. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it's free, it works, and it's five minutes from your caravan. Better than another lap of the park facilities.
