Winey Hill

The highest point in Greater London sounds grander than it actually is. Winey Hill, just outside Chessington, tops out at a modest 147 metres, which means you won't need crampons or a packed lunch, but the walk up is genuine enough and the view across Surrey and into the capital rewards the effort.

It's the sort of place that appeals to serious walkers mapping out the Green Chain Walk or families wanting a proper leg-stretch without committing to an all-day hike. The summit itself is unremarkable - no cairn, no café, just a high point in the landscape - but that's oddly refreshing. You get the sense of having actually gone somewhere rather than ticked a box.

If you're based at Chessington World of Adventures Resort and fancy something quieter than the theme park, this works well as a morning outing. The walk takes maybe 45 minutes depending on your route and fitness. Walton on Thames Camping and Caravanning Club Site is also close enough to make it a reasonable day trip, though you'd want clearer weather for the views to justify the detour.

The appeal here is understated. It's not dramatic or Instagram-friendly, but it's accessible, it's genuinely the highest point around, and it gives you a proper sense of being at a proper vantage point. Don't expect drama. Do expect a decent walk and clear air if conditions are right.
