The walk up Windy Law from Coldstream is straightforward enough, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. The peak sits at 279 metres and the views across the Scottish Borders are genuinely impressive - you're looking out over proper rolling countryside, the kind that makes you understand why this corner of Scotland keeps people coming back.

It's a bracing walk rather than a challenging hike. Most people will knock it out in an hour or so, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to look around. The path is well-trodden, which means it's muddy in places when wet - bring decent boots. There's nothing fancy at the top, no visitor centre or café, just the view and the wind that gives the place its name. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort.

Families with reasonably confident walkers will find it manageable. Older kids enjoy the sense of actually getting somewhere, and the descent is forgiving enough that knackered legs won't suffer too much. It's not the sort of thing that'll keep toddlers entertained, mind you.

Coldstream itself is within spitting distance, and if you're staying at Coldstream Holiday Park - which gets solid reviews - you've got a proper hill walk on your doorstep without needing to drive anywhere. Combine it with a mooch around the town's quiet high street and you've got a decent half-day sorted. Free, obviously. Go early to avoid other walkers and catch the light properly.
