Homilton Hill

The walk up Homilton Hill rewards you with one of those views that makes the Scottish Borders actually feel wild. It's not a technical climb - nothing here is - but the summit gives you proper panoramic reach across rolling moorland that stretches toward the Cheviot Hills. You're looking at around two hours up and back from Coldstream, which sits just five or six miles away as the crow flies.

Historically minded visitors tend to get more from this one. There's a strong sense of being on the borderlands themselves - literally and figuratively. The hill sits in that liminal space where England and Scotland blur together, and you can feel it underfoot. On clear days the views south into Northumberland add another layer entirely.

It's a solid walk for families with older kids rather than young ones - muddy in places, fairly exposed on the ridge, and the path can be indistinct if you're not paying attention. Allow extra time if anyone's still learning their map reading. Free, obviously. Go in autumn when the light's golden and the midges have packed it in, or early summer if you prefer firm ground.
