Windy Hill

The walk up Windy Hill from Burntisland rewards you with proper views across the Firth of Forth once you've made the climb. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at maybe an hour's walk up from the town - but the exposure on blustery days lives up to its name. Worth doing on a clear day when you can actually see something.

This is a straightforward hill walk rather than anything technical. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the gradient, though the path is clear enough. The real appeal is the vantage point over Leuchars and across the water rather than any major summit monument or visitor facility. Bring decent shoes because it gets muddy, especially after rain.

You'll want to allow a good couple of hours there and back if you're not hammering it, and honestly, the wind can be fierce enough that you won't want to linger too long at the top. Go when the weather's settled rather than in autumn storms, or you'll spend the whole time just trying to stay upright.

If you're staying at Pettycur Bay or Sandhills Caravan Park down by Burntisland, this makes a solid afternoon outing that actually gets you moving instead of mooching about the promenade. Kinghorn Harbour is also close enough that you could string it together with a beach walk. Not a day-long draw on its own, but a decent half-day addition to a Fife coast break.
