Windsor Hill

Windsor Hill is a proper woodland walk on Nottinghamshire's doorstep, just outside the city of Nottingham. It's the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss - a genuine forest rather than a manicured country park, with decent-sized trees, uneven terrain, and actual paths that feel like paths rather than tarmac trails.

Once you're in among the oaks and birches, the city noise drops away quickly. The hill itself gives you something to climb towards, and if you pick the right route, there are decent vantage points where Nottingham's sprawl falls away below. It's not dramatic - this isn't Peak District stuff - but it's the real thing: muddy boots, roots across the path, the occasional moment where you genuinely can't hear traffic.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination attraction - you won't spend all day here - but as a morning or afternoon walk from Nottingham or while staying at Janson Fishery Caravan & Camping nearby, it does the job. Families with older kids keen on proper exploring rather than play facilities will manage fine. Young toddlers might struggle with the uneven woodland floor.

Bring proper footwear. Winter after rain is boggy. Spring is genuinely lovely. Summer can feel a bit enclosed and damp under the canopy.

No visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, no admission charge - it's just a bit of working woodland where you can walk. That's rather refreshing.
