Windmill Park

The old windmill here still stands, though it's the landscape around it that really justifies the trip. Windmill Park is a proper nature reserve - gentle walking trails wind through meadows and woodland, the sort of place where you'll actually spot birds rather than just hear them mentioned in a guidebook.

It's best suited to walkers who aren't after anything too strenuous, and families with younger kids will find the paths manageable enough. There's something quite meditative about it, especially midweek when the crowds thin out. Allow a couple of hours to do it properly without rushing.

The nearest town is Macclesfield, which sits reasonably close, making this an easy addition to a park-based break. If you're staying at Kiss Wood Cabins or Avona Escapes - both within striking distance - you could easily slot a morning or afternoon here without it eating up your whole day. The reserve works particularly well in spring when the wildflowers are out, though honestly it's the kind of place that rewards a visit in any season.
