A working farm doubling as a nature reserve sounds like it shouldn't work, but Windmill Farm near Helston absolutely does. You're looking at proper countryside here - open fields, hedgerows thick with nesting birds, and walking routes that actually feel like you're getting somewhere rather than just trudging round a park loop.

The windmill itself is the focal point, though don't expect grand restoration work or tea rooms. This is the real thing: functional, weathered, genuinely rooted in how people lived and farmed around here. The reserve sits at a decent elevation, so the views across the surrounding farmland are worth the visit alone. Spring brings migrant birds through; summer's when you'll spot barn owls if you're lucky and patient. Winter can be boggy underfoot, so time your visit accordingly.

It's ideal for walkers who want something beyond the typical tourist trail, and families with older kids will appreciate the space to explore without crowds. You won't get much from an hour here - allow half a day if you're serious about it. The nearest proper facilities are in Helston itself, about twenty minutes away by car.

If you're based at Henry's Camp Site just down the road (less than two miles), this makes an excellent morning walk before heading to the beaches.
