Windle Hall

The earthworks at Windle Hall near Skelmersdale are genuinely worth tracking down if you're into archaeology or landscape history. What you're looking at are the remains of a medieval hall - basically a raised platform and defensive features that hint at serious status once upon a time. There's not much left standing, which is actually fine; it forces you to use your imagination rather than just gawping at a restored showcase.

The site itself feels quite raw and northern - windswept fields, proper moorland atmosphere, the kind of place where you can almost hear the medieval squabbles that went on here. You won't find crowds or a visitor centre, which means it's either brilliantly authentic or frustratingly unmarked depending on your mood.
