Windcutter Hill

Standing at 218 metres, this grassy summit offers one of North Devon's finest coastal panoramas without the crowds that flock to nearby Woolacombe Beach. The walk up is fairly gentle - a proper ramble rather than a lung-busting climb - though it does get a bit boggy after rain.

From the top, you'll get cracking views across Woolacombe Bay and out to Lundy Island on clear days. The sight of surfers below looking like tiny dots really puts the scale of this coastline into perspective. Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain.

It's completely free to access, as you'd expect with most Devon hills, and you'll want to allow about two hours for the round trip including time to soak up those views. Early morning visits often reward you with the best visibility before the afternoon haze rolls in.
