The car park at Wilton is barely signposted, which tells you something straight away - this isn't a destination designed for Instagram footfall. What you're getting here is access to a proper nature reserve on the outskirts of Hawick, the sort of place locals know about and tourists tend to miss entirely.

It's a small operation. You pull in, lock the car, and suddenly you're surrounded by moorland and woodland that feels genuinely wild for the Borders. The walking trails are straightforward rather than demanding, which suits families and anyone after a gentle couple of hours rambling without the crowds you'd find at more publicised spots.

The reserve itself is good for spotting birds and taking in the landscape - nothing flashy, just honest Scottish countryside with decent views across the rolling terrain. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you want to do the main circuit properly rather than just pottering about for half an hour.
