White Hill

The climb up White Hill from Hawick takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a reasonable pace, and the effort pays off with proper views across the Borders. You're looking out over rolling moorland and farmland that stretches toward the Cheviot Hills - it's the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people fought over this region for centuries.

The summit itself is modest. There's no grand cairn or shelter, just open hill with short grass and heather. On a clear day you can see for miles; on a misty one you can barely see your boots. That's half the appeal, really - it's genuine, not tarted up for tourists.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's steep enough to feel like proper exercise without requiring any scrambling or technical skill. Families with older kids (ten plus) will manage fine if they're used to hiking. You don't need more than two hours total unless you're taking your time over the views.

There's nothing here to slow you down - no cafe, no visitor centre, no gift shop - which means you're paying nothing and getting an honest hill experience. Timing-wise, go when the weather's reasonable; the wind can be vicious up top, and cloud cover kills the view entirely.
