Ale Water Valley

The Ale Water Valley cuts through the rolling moorland south of Hawick like someone's drawn a line with a ruler - straight, purposeful, and surprisingly dramatic when you're standing at the edge. It's not a theme park or a visitor centre; it's a proper valley carved by the river that gives it its name, and the appeal is entirely down to landscape and walking.

This is terrain for people who actually enjoy getting their boots muddy. The valley offers decent walking routes at various grades, from riverside meanders to hillside tramps with real views across the Borders. On a clear day you can see why people settled here centuries ago - water, shelter, defensible high ground. On a wet one you'll understand why they built so many stone walls.

There's no admission fee because there's nothing ticketed here - it's open countryside with public access. Allow two to four hours depending on which path you take. Spring's probably nicest, when the valley's greening up and the midges haven't hatched yet.
