Wilmslow Methodist Church

The red-brick Methodist chapel on Wilmslow's main drag isn't exactly the sort of place you'd stumble into by accident, but if you're staying at Sycamore Farm or Eastwood End and fancy a quiet half-hour away from the caravan, it's worth a look. Built in the 19th century, it's a proper piece of local religious history - the sort of solid, no-nonsense Nonconformist architecture you find dotted across industrial Cheshire.

Inside, you'll find the usual pews, a decent organ, and that particular smell all old Methodist chapels share - furniture polish and time. It's not massive, which means you can take it in properly without feeling rushed. The community still uses it regularly, so you might catch a service or event if you time it right; check their website first.

Who should go? History types with an interest in 19th-century Methodism will find it genuinely interesting. Family groups probably won't linger long - kids get restless in empty churches - but if you're walking around Wilmslow town centre (not far from Macclesfield), it's an easy detour and costs nothing. Allow 20 minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type to read every plaque.

It fits neatly into a lazy afternoon exploring the area around your base. Wilmslow itself has decent shops and cafes, so you could make a proper morning of it rather than treating the chapel as a standalone stop.
