The steep path up Williamson Park rewards you with proper views across Lancaster and beyond - the kind of panorama that makes the leg burn worthwhile. At the summit sits the Ashton Memorial, a gleaming stone tower that dominates the skyline for miles around. It's free to walk around the grounds, though I'd check ahead if the memorial itself is open to climb.

This is walker territory, no question. The ascent takes about twenty minutes at a steady pace, but families with younger children might find it a slog - there's no half-measure here, just uphill most of the way. Older kids who like a challenge will enjoy it, especially if you make a game of spotting Lancaster's Georgian architecture from the top. The park itself spreads across the hillside with decent enough paths and plenty of spots to pause and catch your breath.

You'll want a good hour minimum, longer if you're the type to sit about and soak in the views. Early morning or late afternoon light hits the memorial beautifully - worthwhile timing if you're after photographs. Winter visits clear the crowds but the wind can be brutal.
