William's Wood

A proper woodland walk on the outskirts of Chester, William's Wood is one of those reserves that rewards a bit of leg work. The paths wind through mixed deciduous trees - oak, birch, ash - with enough undergrowth to keep it feeling genuinely wild rather than manicured. Spring's the obvious time to visit if you're after bluebells, but autumn's when the wood actually comes alive. The canopy turns brilliant shades and the light filters through at angles that make even a short stroll feel restorative.

It's best suited to walkers and nature spotters rather than those after a massive destination. You're not going to spend all afternoon here, but that's rather the point. Allow ninety minutes at most, even if you take the longer loop. The terrain's manageable, though muddy patches after rain aren't optional - proper walking boots are worth the bother.
