William Ogilve Memorial Cairn

There's a modest stone cairn sitting on the hillside near Hawick, erected to remember William Ogilve - a man whose name means far more to the local landscape than his memorial might first suggest. He was a tenant farmer who, in 1797, decided he'd had enough of being pushed around by the landowner and took direct action by ploughing up enclosed land that had been seized from common use. His protest was one of the early sparks of agricultural reform in the Borders, and the cairn marks that moment of defiance.

Walking out to it is the main event here. This isn't a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours - thirty minutes to an hour covers the visit comfortably. The real appeal is the walk itself through Scottish Borders terrain, with decent views once you've put in the leg work. History buffs will find the story interesting enough to justify the trip, particularly if you're already exploring the area around Hawick. Families won't get much from lingering, but it makes a reasonable waypoint on a longer ramble.
