Willen Lake Labyrinth

A spiralling path carved into the ground near Milton Keynes sounds like the sort of thing you'd skip past, but the Willen Lake Labyrinth actually rewards a proper wander. It's a full-size maze etched into the landscape by the water's edge - the kind of thing that looks deceptively simple from above but manages to twist you around once you're in it.

The walk takes about twenty minutes if you're not rushing, which is exactly the right amount of time to either zone out or drive yourself mad trying to work out which way the path goes next. It's free, which helps, and there's genuine lake views whilst you're navigating. The water itself is pleasant enough - swans, the occasional jogger, Milton Keynes' predictable flatness broken up by the odd tree.

Families with kids will get something from it, though younger ones might lose interest before the end. It's genuinely decent for a solo walk if you need to clear your head - something about following a prescribed path is oddly meditative. Historians won't find much here; it's modern enough, built more for the landscaping than the backstory.

If you're staying at Ekeney House Campsite nearby, it's worth the short drive over. Pair it with a lap of the lake itself - about forty minutes all in - and you've got a solid hour sorted. Best visited when it's not raining; muddy paths lose some of their charm. Go mid-week if crowds bother you.
