Wildboar Hill

The walk up Wildboar Hill from Appleby-in-Westmorland is straightforward and rewards you with proper views across the Eden Valley. Nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see a fair way across Cumbria - the kind of vista that makes sense of why people settle here.

It's a fell walk rather than a scramble, so most reasonably fit adults will manage it without fuss. The summit itself isn't particularly high or wild, but it's the sort of place where you understand the landscape rather than just pass through it. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger ones might find it a bit dull after the initial climb.

Allow a couple of hours if you're in no hurry. There's no visitor centre or facilities up top, so bring water. Best done when the weather's settled - cloud rolls in fast around here and the views vanish.

Appleby itself is worth a wander round - proper market town with actual shops, not the usual tourist tat.
