Widdecombe Ley

The wetland here is properly special - shallow pools fringed with reeds, the kind of place where you'll spot dragonflies zigzagging above the water and, if you're lucky, herons standing absolutely still at dawn. Widdecombe Ley is a working nature reserve near Kingsbridge that feels genuinely off the tourist trail, which is part of its appeal.

Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared - bring binoculars, a decent camera if you're into that sort of thing, and waterproof boots because paths can be boggy even days after rain. You're looking at anything from a quick 20-minute wander to a couple of hours if you're serious about spotting something rare.

The reserve is free to access, though parking can be tight on weekends. Spring and autumn are the best times - migration season brings visiting warblers and occasional rarities that get the twitchers excited. Summer works if you don't mind insects, but it's honestly a bit muggy and the water level drops.

If you're based at Start Bay Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, this is an easy morning tick. It pairs well with a proper walk across the surrounding South Devon countryside - the Kingsbridge area has decent trails. Wilton Farm Camping is another solid option nearby if you want somewhere with slightly more amenities. Don't expect crowds or facilities. That's the whole point.
