Beesands

The pebble beach at Beesands stretches out in that particular Devon way - all grey shingle and low cliffs, backed by a proper working fishing village that hasn't been prettified into a gift shop. Park near Kingsbridge and you're looking at a solid drive to the coast, but it's worth it if you're after somewhere that feels genuinely lived-in rather than performed for tourists.

What you get is a long, wide beach that's brilliant for a proper walk. The pebbles are relentless underfoot - trainers recommended - but the views across Start Bay open up nicely, and on a clear day you can see for miles. The village behind has a couple of cafes and fishing boats that actually do fish, which feels authentic. Kids will spend a decent hour hunting for shells and skimming stones; older walkers appreciate the stretch without crowds.

There's no entrance fee - it's a beach - but parking is tight in summer. Go early or visit outside peak season if you value peace. Allow two to three hours minimum for a proper visit, longer if you're the type who gets lost in the landscape.

Both Start Bay Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and Wilton Farm Camping sit within a few miles, making Beesands an easy afternoon from a park stay. It's not going to wow you with dramatic cliffs or hidden coves, but as a working beach with character and space to breathe, it holds its own.
