Walking into Wickslet Copse near Hungerford, you're struck by how quiet it is. No crowds, no obvious signage, just proper woodland doing what it does best - offering shelter under dense canopy and the kind of peace that's increasingly rare. The trees are mature and closely planted, creating that distinctive gloom that forest walkers either love or find a touch claustrophobic.

It's a straightforward woodland experience rather than a manicured nature reserve. Paths wind through, though they're not always obvious underfoot, and the whole thing feels like you've stumbled onto something locals know about but tourists haven't found yet. You won't find themed trails or visitor facilities here - bring decent boots and expect mud, especially after rain.

This works best for walkers after a proper leg-stretch rather than families wanting a quick stroll. If you've got kids, they'll either be captivated by climbing fallen logs and searching for woodland creatures, or they'll be bored within twenty minutes. There's no in-between.

For a park-based holiday at Lorne Hill Farm or Rhodeside Close, both within five to six miles, Wickslet Copse makes for a solid morning walk before heading back for lunch. It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from forty-five minutes to a couple of hours depending on how deep into the trees you fancy going. Time it for autumn or early spring when the woodland floor is most interesting and visibility isn't completely blocked by summer growth.
