Membury Airfield, WWII

Walk across open countryside near Hungerford and you're treading on what was once a fully operational American airbase. Membury Airfield doesn't look like much now - it's farmland, really, with concrete runways cracking under decades of weather - but during the Second World War this was a major hub for the US Eighth Air Force. B-17 Flying Fortresses took off from here on bombing runs across occupied Europe.

What you actually get is a chance to wander the former runways and taxi tracks, spotting the odd concrete bunker or building foundation if you know where to look. It's atmospheric more than visually spectacular. There's a small memorial on site, and the local community has worked to preserve what remains, but this isn't a manicured museum experience. You're essentially walking a working farm with historical significance baked into the landscape.

History enthusiasts will find it genuinely moving - this is real wartime infrastructure, not a recreation. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming; there's not much to do beyond walking and reading plaques. Allow an hour, maybe two if you're thorough. It's free to access, though facilities are limited.

If you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm or Evelyns Garden Glamping nearby, it's worth a morning visit before heading elsewhere. It pairs well with other Berkshire attractions, though don't expect anything polished. This is heritage in its rawest form.
