Wickham Market Church, All Saints

All Saints in Wickham Market is one of those Suffolk churches that rewards a quiet afternoon with genuine peace and a bit of architectural intrigue. The building itself is largely fifteenth century, which means you're looking at proper Perpendicular Gothic - high windows, decent proportions, the sort of thing that makes you understand why medieval parishes took their churches seriously.

What strikes you walking in is the light. The east window does most of the work, and on a clear day it floods the chancel with something close to reverence without needing anyone to manufacture it. The font is medieval, as is usually the case, and there's enough carved detail around the roof to keep you occupied for twenty minutes if you're into that sort of thing.

This isn't a showstopper like some of the cathedral-grade churches you find dotted across East Anglia, but that's rather the point. Wickham Market itself is a modest working village, and All Saints feels properly integrated into it rather than serving as a tourist attraction. You'll spend forty minutes here maximum, longer if you're the type to sit in pews and absorb atmosphere.

If you're based at any of the nearby campsites - The Orchard is barely ten minutes' walk away - it's absolutely worth wandering over. Pop in after breakfast, spend some time in the churchyard if the weather's decent, then carry on with your day. Free entry, obviously. Go when you feel like it; churches don't really have peak times.
