Wicken Windpump

The old brick tower rises without warning from the flat Cambridgeshire fens - Wicken Windpump is one of those places that stops you in your tracks precisely because there's so little else around to compete for attention. Built in the 1820s, this wind-powered pumping station once shifted water across the marshland with the sort of engineering ingenuity that the Fens desperately needed. You can walk right up to it, and that's largely the point. There's no visitor centre or gift shop nonsense, just the structure itself - all weathered red brick and the ghost of its industrial purpose.

Historically minded visitors will find it genuinely interesting. The mechanics of how these things worked, the sheer determination required to farm this landscape before steam engines, it all makes sense standing here. It's not a destination in isolation though - most people combine it with a walk across Wicken Fen itself, which is a proper nature reserve managed by the National Trust. The fen is genuinely wild in places, particularly in spring and early summer when the dragonflies are out.

Practically speaking, admission appears to be free, and you'll want twenty minutes to half an hour maximum at the windpump itself before the fens draw your attention. It sits reasonably close to Cambridge if you're based in the area, and Chittering Park is only four miles away if you're looking for overnight accommodation. This isn't a rainy-day attraction - you need decent weather and decent footwear. But if you're the sort who enjoys walking and understands the appeal of industrial archaeology, it's absolutely worth the detour.
