Wicken Fen Visitor Centre

The visitor centre at Wicken Fen sits at the heart of one of England's oldest nature reserves, about ten miles northeast of Cambridge. This is proper fenland - flat, wet, and wonderfully alive with birds, insects, and plants that thrive nowhere else in the country. The centre itself is modest but well-run, with displays explaining the ecology of the fen and its conservation history stretching back over a century. You get a real sense here of what the Fens used to look like before drainage turned them into farmland.

It's excellent for anyone interested in wildlife and natural history. Birdwatchers will find their binoculars well-used - marsh harriers, bitterns, and countless waders depending on the season. Families with younger children might spend an hour or two; older kids and serious naturalists will happily lose half a day to the trails and bird hides. The walks are mostly flat and accessible, though you'll want proper footwear when it's been wet.

Going in spring or early summer gives you the best show of wildflowers and breeding birds. The visitor centre gives you context before you head out onto the reserve itself. If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites - Lodeside or Fen Meadows are both close by - this makes a genuine morning or afternoon activity rather than a rushed stop-off. It's not a showpiece attraction, but it's genuinely interesting if you care about what makes the East Anglian landscape tick.
