Wicken Fen

The boardwalks at Wicken Fen creak under your boots as you push deeper into one of England's oldest nature reserves. This is proper fenland - the kind of landscape that once stretched across East Anglia before farming drained most of it away. What you're walking through is a living time capsule, managed by the National Trust to preserve the wetland ecosystem exactly as it was centuries ago.

It's genuinely brilliant for anyone who actually cares about wildlife rather than just snapping Instagram photos. Dragonflies zip past your head, rare plants cling to the margins, and if you're patient, you might spot a marsh harrier. The main boardwalk loop takes about an hour and requires minimal fitness - it's flat, obviously, being a fen. The narrower paths get muddier and demand proper boots, especially after rain.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that this place hasn't been "restored" or "improved" - it's simply been left to its own devices, which is remarkably rare. Children under eight might find it a bit samey, though older kids tracking insects or sketching birds will be engaged for hours.

Located just east of Cambridge, it works perfectly as a morning or afternoon outing alongside the nearby holiday parks. Chittering Park sits four miles away, while Fen End Farm and the Orchard Campsite are six miles south - both solid bases for exploring the Fens properly rather than just driving through. Free entry, though donations are encouraged. Go early to avoid the weekend crowds and watch the light change across the water.
