Whorlton Beck Waterfall

The walk to Whorlton Beck Waterfall is honestly better than the falls themselves, which might sound like damning praise but isn't meant to be. What you're after here is a proper moorland hike through the Tees Valley, starting from near Barnard Castle - the waterfall is just the excuse to get out there.

The beck tumbles down through a steep-sided valley with dark stone and rough grass either side. It's not Niagara. It's not even that dramatic on a dry day. But on a grey afternoon when the water's high and the mist's rolling across the hills, it feels properly wild. You'll need forty minutes to an hour from the nearest parking, so budget half a day minimum if you're doing it properly.

Walkers will love this more than casual strollers. The path's uneven in places and the valley sides are steep enough that you need to be steady on your feet. Kids who don't mind mud and open moorland will be fine, but those after a quick photo opportunity will get bored fast.

It's free and open whenever - just turn up. The nearest proper base is Barnard Castle itself, though if you're camping, Teesdale Barnard Castle Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is rated highly and puts you within striking distance. Combine it with the castle in town or one of the other Tees Valley walks. On its own it's a bit of a trek, but as part of a walking weekend in Yorkshire it slots in nicely.
