Whitley Grove

You won't find Whitley Grove on many tourist maps, which is precisely why it's worth the drive out from Coventry. This proper woodland sits tucked into Warwickshire's quieter corners - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think among the old oaks and tangled undergrowth.

It's a walker's wood rather than a destination playground. Come for the canopy cover on hot days, the network of paths that wind deeper in without ever feeling lost, and the chance to spot woodland birds if you're that way inclined. There's something meditative about forests like this - nothing flashy, just honest trees and space. You're looking at a solid hour's exploration if you take a proper wander, maybe ninety minutes if you dawdle and sit on a log somewhere.

Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before the novelty wears off - it's not a themed attraction with bells and whistles. Serious walkers and anyone escaping Coventry's urban sprawl will appreciate the breathing room. The forest works well as a palate cleanser between bigger park visits if you're staying at Lairhillock Park nearby - gives you a different sort of outdoor day without the structured activity.

No facilities to speak of as far as I can tell, so come prepared with water and decent shoes. Winter's muddy but manageable; autumn's probably the pick of it when the light filters through differently. Free to wander, which keeps it accessible.
