Lunt Roman Fort

The reconstructed fort sits on the outskirts of Coventry, and it's genuinely one of those places that forces you to stop and imagine what was actually happening here nearly 2,000 years ago. Lunt Roman Fort is a working reconstruction - not some dusty museum piece, but timber ramparts and gatehouses rebuilt to show what a second-century auxiliary fort would have looked like when Roman legions were keeping watch over the Midlands.

You're walking around actual defensive structures here. The fort's relatively small, so a proper look takes about an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to read every interpretation board. The wooden palisade gives it a surprisingly authentic feel - you can almost hear the soldiers' boots on the gravel. The centrepiece is the gyrus, a circular training ground for cavalry horses, which you won't see at many other Roman sites in Britain.

This works best for history-minded visitors, particularly families with children old enough to engage with Roman military life. School groups come here regularly, which tells you it's educational without being patronising. Opening times are limited to school holidays on weekdays, so you can't just drop by on a whim - plan ahead. Admission details aren't clearly posted online, so ring ahead before you drive over from Coventry.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Eriba Glade or Broadwell Woods are closest - it's an easy half-hour drive. Pair it with Coventry's medieval Old Market Hall or a walk around Kenilworth Castle for a proper Roman and medieval day out. Well worth the detour if archaeology interests you, but not a casual Sunday afternoon spot.
