Whiting Wood

Whiting Wood is a proper working forest just outside Robertsbridge, the kind of place where you actually feel like you've stepped away from it all rather than just walked fifty metres into the trees. The woodland is thick with mature growth - oak, ash, beech - and there's a real sense of depth to it, paths that make you wonder what's around the next bend. You'll find yourself genuinely lost in the canopy rather than just wandering through a park.

Walkers get the most from this spot. There's a network of trails that reward poking about, and if you've got decent boots and a bit of energy, you can spend two or three hours exploring without hitting the same path twice. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, which is lovely when it's not waterlogged, though after rain it can get squelchy in places. Bring gaiters if you're fussy about mud.

It's also decent for anyone after a bit of quiet. No obvious play parks or facilities - this isn't a tamed country estate - which means you won't be fighting crowds or stepping over crisp packets. That said, young children might get bored once the novelty of "proper forest" wears off after the first half-hour.

If you're staying at Wood View Farm Glamping nearby, this becomes an obvious morning walk before breakfast. It works well as part of a longer woodland crawl around the High Weald rather than a destination in itself. Go when it's dry enough to actually enjoy it rather than just surviving it.
