Robertsbridge Abbey

The ruins of Robertsbridge Abbey sit quietly beside the River Rother, about a mile outside the village itself. What remains are mainly the footings and lower walls of what was once a substantial Cistercian monastery founded in 1176, though much has been claimed by time and the Sussex soil. You'll see the outline of the abbey church quite clearly, and if you walk around you can make out the cloisters and some of the outbuildings. It's genuinely moving stuff - the kind of place where you can stand in what used to be the refectory and imagine the rhythm of monastic life.

Historians and anyone interested in medieval religion will find real value here. The setting matters as much as the stones themselves - the river running past, the flat water meadows, the sense of purposeful isolation that clearly appealed to the monks. It's not dramatic like some ruins can be, but it's authentic and peaceful. Families with younger kids might get a quick walk out of it but won't hang about for long unless they're genuinely interested in medieval architecture.

Access appears to be free and open, though best to check locally in Robertsbridge before making the trip. Allow an hour to see everything properly and get a feel for the place. The site pairs well with a week based at Seven Acre Woods or The Original Hut Company just down the road - both excellent camping spots. This is proper working countryside, not a manicured heritage experience, which is entirely to its credit.
