Whitehill Wood

The woodland paths at Whitehill Wood offer proper relief from the tourist crush of Canterbury city centre - it's only a couple of miles out but feels genuinely removed. The forest itself is mixed woodland, decent enough for a straightforward walk without being spectacularly dramatic. You get tall trees, a decent canopy, and the usual suspects of Kent forestry, but it won't blow your mind if you're comparing it to the New Forest or anywhere similarly grand.

For families with younger kids, a solid hour here does the job nicely - they can burn off energy, splash in mud, and there's enough space to let them loose without worrying constantly. Walkers will find it serviceable rather than essential; the paths are clear enough but this isn't the sort of place where the views or rare plants justify a special trip on their own. It works best as an add-on when you're already in the Canterbury area, rather than a destination in itself.

The real advantage is proximity. If you're based at Canterbury Camping and Caravanning Club Campsite or Canterbury Lodges and Glamping, you can be under the trees in minutes without needing to drive far. That's where it earns its keep - as a convenient green space when the cathedral visits and city walking have done you in. Come here to reset rather than to discover something remarkable. No entrance fee complications that I can establish, just turn up and walk.
