Milleneum Monument

Art and contemporary work make up the bulk of what you'll find at the Millennium Monument, a gallery just outside Canterbury that's worth a quick detour if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites. It's the sort of place where you can spend anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, depending on how deep you want to go with the exhibitions.

The space itself feels modern without being sterile - you get actual room to breathe around the pieces rather than being herded along a corridor. The work on display leans toward contemporary art, so if you're after dusty old portraits and stately home furniture, you'll be disappointed. But if you want to see what's happening in the current art scene, or you're bringing teenagers who might actually engage with something that doesn't require a school uniform, it's worth the visit.

Based in the Kent countryside between Canterbury and the coast, the Monument works well as a rainy-day plan if you're camped at Canterbury Camping and Caravanning Club or any of the glamping spots further afield like Mount Ephraim or Seaview Holiday Park. It breaks up a holiday nicely without demanding half your day.

The main thing to do is ring ahead before you go - opening hours and admission fees aren't straightforward, and you don't want to drive over only to find it closed for a private event. It's not the sort of place that pulls huge crowds, which honestly works in your favour.
