Whitehill Head

The walk up Whitehill Head rewards you with one of those views that justifies the effort - rolling Perthshire spreading out below, the Tay valley cutting through green hills, and on a clear day, you can pick out the distant lumps of the Highland peaks. It's not a massive height - nothing that requires special kit or hours of scrambling - but it's proper hillwalking, the kind that gets your legs working and clears your head thoroughly.

The summit itself is modest: moorland, a few cairns, the kind of place where you notice how quiet things get up here. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on your pace and fitness. There's no formal trail in the traditional sense, so you need to know what you're doing with a map or a phone app - it's not one for wandering aimlessly.

This works well for experienced walkers and those after a half-day outing without committing to a full Munro. Families with older kids who've done a few hills would manage it, though younger ones might find the moorland section a bit featureless. The moorland itself is proper boggy in places, especially after rain.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Gallowhill Caravan & Camping Park or Maycroft Retreat are close to Perth - this makes a solid morning or early afternoon venture. Perth itself is just down the road, so you can combine it with time in town. Worth doing if you're in the area and the weather's on your side.
