Whitefield Rough

Whitefield Rough is a proper woodland walk just outside Southampton - the kind of place locals know about and visitors often miss. It's dense forest with decent footpaths, good for stretching the legs without needing a map or hiring a guide. The trees are thick enough that you feel genuinely away from the urban sprawl, even though you're minutes from town.

Walkers will get the most from this. There's nothing dramatic - no viewpoints, no ruins, no tea room - just good woodland walking. You could spend an hour here comfortably, longer if you're the type to stop and listen to birds. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes, unless they're into exploring fallen logs and looking for wildlife.

If you're based at Lepe Beach Campsite just down the road, this is an easy add-on for a morning walk. The beach itself is brilliant, so you could do a couple of hours in the forest then head to the coast for lunch. Sunnycott Caravan Park and Comforts Farm are also within spitting distance if you're staying over.

No entry fees that I'm aware of, no facilities on site - bring water and sensible footwear. It's the sort of place that rewards you for going, rather than giving you much to look at. Worth a walk if you're in the area, but don't drive out of your way specially for it.
