About Whitefield Hill
On a clear day you can see right across the Northumberland ridges, and the moorland either side of the summit has that open, wind-swept quality that feels genuinely wild. The path itself is well-trodden, though it can be boggy in places after rain - proper boots recommended. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're pottering about at the top with a thermos.
This is ideal for walkers staying at Whitton Glebe or Riverside Rothbury - both caravan parks sit close enough that you can easily incorporate Whitefield into a morning's rambling. Families with older kids will get something out of it; younger ones might find it a bit samey halfway up. History buffs won't find much up there, but it's the kind of hill where you feel the weight of the landscape rather than the story.
Go on a decent weather day. On a grey, drizzly afternoon it's just a muddy walk to nowhere. Worth the detour though if you're exploring the moorland around Morpeth.
