Simonside

The walk up Simonside from Rothbury takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and honestly, it's the best bit of the Coquet Valley. You get proper views across Northumberland once you crest the ridge - the kind where you can see for miles on a clear day and absolutely nothing on a dreich one.

It's a straightforward fell walk rather than a scramble, so families with older kids manage it fine, though younger ones might need a hand on the steeper sections. The summit sits at just over 1,400 feet, and the heather moorland up there is striking, especially in late summer when it's in bloom. Take the eastern ridge route if you want the best descent - it's less punishing on the knees.

Allow three to four hours for the full circuit, including a breather at the top. There's no cafe or facilities at the summit, so pack water and something to eat. The nearest town is Morpeth, but Rothbury itself is much closer and a proper little base for exploring the area.

If you're staying at Riverside Rothbury Holiday Park or Whitton Glebe Caravan Park, this is a no-brainer for a half-day outing. Weather can turn quickly on the ridge, so check conditions before you head out. It's the sort of walk that rewards you with genuine peace - you won't be queuing for selfies up there.
