White Sheet Camp

The Iron Age fort crowning White Sheet Down, just south of Warminster, is one of those Wiltshire spots that rewards the leg work. It's not a dramatic ruin - you won't find crumbling stones or reconstructed gateways. What you get instead is the raw geography of ancient defence: a hillfort with properly substantial ramparts and ditches that still command respect after two thousand years. Walking the perimeter takes the best part of an hour, and honestly, it's worth every minute.

History buffs will have the most fun here, puzzling out how the Iron Age occupants would have lived and fought on this exposed chalk downland. The views across the Wiltshire landscape are genuinely excellent - clear days offer sight lines for miles. Kids might find the actual archaeology a bit abstract without hands-on stuff, though scrambling up and down the earthworks keeps them occupied.

It's free to visit and open year-round, though winter mud can be grim on the steeper slopes. Allow two hours if you're doing a proper circuit.
