White Ridge

The walk up White Ridge rewards you with one of those views that makes you forget you're only a few miles from Exeter. It's not the highest peak on Dartmoor, but the moorland sprawls out in every direction - real, open, and windswept in the way moorland should be.

You're looking at a straightforward moorland walk rather than anything technical. Most people allow between one and two hours depending on fitness and how long you want to linger at the top. The ridge itself is properly exposed, so come prepared for weather that can turn quickly; a clear day here is genuinely special, but fog rolls in without warning and suddenly you're navigating by compass.

Historians might find the Bronze Age remains scattered across the moor more interesting than the actual walk - stone circles and cairns dot the landscape if you know where to look. Families with young kids will find the terrain manageable but exposed; older teenagers and keen walkers will get more from it. It's the sort of place that justifies the drive out from Exeter rather than being a proper destination on its own.

Make this part of a longer Dartmoor exploration - pair it with time at Dartmoor National Park itself, which sits just down the road. The park encompasses far more interesting bits of the moor if you've got a day to spare. White Ridge works best as a half-day outing before heading elsewhere. Free to visit, of course, and no facilities at the top - bring water and something to eat.
