White Knowe

White Knowe sits just above Hawick at a modest 430 metres - not high enough to feel like a proper mountain, but plenty tall enough to give you the sense you've earned something. The walk up takes around two hours return from the town, depending on your fitness and how many times you stop to turn around and look at the valleys spreading out behind you.

It's a straightforward hill walk, nothing technical, though the path can be boggy in patches and the Scottish weather has a habit of arriving faster than you'd like. Clear days are rarer than you'd hope, but when visibility's decent the views across the Borders are genuinely worth the effort - rolling farmland, distant hills, and if you're lucky, a sense of actual isolation despite being minutes from civilisation.

This isn't a place for younger children unless they're determined walkers. There's no café at the top, no facilities, just grass and wind and the satisfaction of having climbed something. Adults after a proper leg-stretcher will find it solid. History buffs won't find much - it's pure landscape, which is rather the point.

Free to access, obviously. Allow a good three hours if you want to sit at the summit without rushing. Go on a weekday if possible; weekends can feel busy for such a quiet hill.
