White Hill

The walk up White Hill from Wells takes you past proper Somerset countryside - rolling fields, dry stone walls, the occasional sheep staring at you like you've interrupted something important. It's not a dramatic climb, more of a steady pull uphill, and the view from the top is genuinely worth the effort. You can see across to the Mendips and beyond, especially on a clear day when the haze lifts.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids and anyone after a decent leg-stretch without needing mountaineering gear. Allow an hour to get up and back down at a relaxed pace, maybe longer if you're the type to stop and photograph everything. There's no visitor centre or facilities up there - it's just you, the grass, and the Somerset vista.

The walk works brilliantly as part of a wider exploration of the area. If you're based at Cheddar Camping and Caravanning Club Site - five miles away and with decent reviews - you've got White Hill as a morning outing before heading to the Gorge or the caves. Wells itself is close enough for afternoon wandering around the cathedral and market square.

Summer's the obvious choice for good views, though spring can be lovely too. Winter's fine for a walk, just expect mud in places. Free to visit, no gates or barriers, just proper outdoor access the way it should be.
